FIFA Swings Into Action

FIFA, world football's governing body, will investigate the statement made by its head of security Chris Eaton linking Malaysian football administrators to match-fixing in Southeast Asia.

The FA of Malaysia (FAM) wrote to Fifa on March 13, demanding an apology for Eaton's statement made to Singapore daily Straits Times.

FAM general secretary Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad, said Fifa president Sepp Blatter received the letter on March 15.

"Fifa will get back to us once investigations are completed. We have not heard from them since then," said Azzuddin in a text message yesterday.

It was agreed in last year's meeting in Petaling Jaya between Eaton and FAM that Fifa would communicate with the national body on all matters pertaining to illegal football activities but the former Interpol agent did not follow procedures when he revealed information to the Singapore newspaper.

Eaton met with FAM officials in Kelana Jaya on March 5 to explain his claims but the Australian was hesitant to reveal anything, instead promising to hand over the information to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), which he has yet to do so.
