Causeway Challenge Part 2: Malaysia v Singapore

Having seen his team succumb to two late goals last Friday at the Jalan Besar Stadium, Malaysia coach K. Rajagopal will be looking for his side to get the victory he believes they should have clinched against Singapore this coming Tuesday at the Shah Alam Stadium.

The Tigers were seemingly cruising to a comfortable win when a frantic finish saw Shahdan Sulaiman and then Qiu Li equalise for the Lions, but the Malaysians will be confident in coming out on top back on home turf.

Due to National Service commitments, a problem which has plagued the national team for ages, there will be a few Singapore players who will not be travelling up north for this game.

Midfield enforcer Hariss Harun and key defender Safuwan Baharudin will miss out, as will Shakir Hamzah, who made his debut at left-back last Friday. Apart from the above-mentioned trio who started in the 2-2 draw, Raihan Rahman and Khairul Nizam will also not be with the team. Evergreen striker Aleksandar Duric has been called up to bolster the squad in Khairul’s absence.

It is thus highly unlikely that Raddy Avramovic will field a starting line-up consisting solely of LionsXII players. Daniel Bennett should deputise for Safuwan, with Mustafic Fahrudin coming in for Hariss, although Shi Jiayi is another option. Shaiful Esah should revert back to left-back, with Qiu Li taking his place on the left wing, while it will not be a surprise if Duric starts instead of Agu Casmir.

K. Rajagopal did not rule out the possibility of Azamuddin Akil starting on Tuesday, after the substitute made a scoring impact after coming on in the first half during Friday’s game. Norshahrul Idlan and Safee Sali will likely continue their dangerous double act upfront, which will cause problems for the Singapore defence.

This game should also see Malaysia taking a more offensive approach to the game than they did at Jalan Besar, where they will hunt for a win against their fierce rivals after losing or drawing the previous ten clashes.

Expect the Malaysians to be fired up for this match, after last Friday’s result which will serve as motivation for them to even the scores.
