NO CHOICE: Brunei can only play in third tier competition following FAM's decision
BRUNEI may not return to the M-League next season following the FA of Malaysia's (FAM) decision not to allow them direct entry into the Super League or Premier League.
FAM decided that Brunei will only be accepted to play in the FAM League, the nation's third tier competition.
If next season's league format remains, Brunei will need to win the FAM League to earn promotion to the Premier League.
FAM competitions committee chairman Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin said the Brunei FA's request has been accepted.
"The Brunei FA sent an official request and after deliberation, we have accepted them. However, as we have already decided on the format of next season's M-League, they will have to start in the FAM League," said Hamidin yesterday.
"We have not got any confirmation after we informed them three weeks ago about our condition."
"If Brunei accept the offer, they will have to cover the costs of the visiting team's accommodation and transport for matches in Bandar Seri Begawan." he added.
The Brunei FA had applied to play in the M-League as requested by its president Prince Sufri Bolkiah following their Under-21 team's victory at the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy in March.
Brunei previously played in the M-League where their best result was winning the Malaysia Cup in 1999. The sultanate's only professional side, DPMM FC, presently play in the S-League.
On whether Young Tigers 'B' would have to play in the Premier League play-off with the second-placed FAM League side, Hamidin said their status quo will remain for the new season.
Tigers 'B' are third from bottom in the Premier League with only nine points from 12 matches. The bottom-placed team will be automatically relegated to the FAM League while the ninth, 10th and 11th placed sides will go through a play-off.
The FAM runners-up will join the three in the play-off where the winners will play in the Premier League.
