Malaysia put on an aggressive performance to come out worthy winners against Singapore, thanks to goals from Shakir Ali and Safiq Rahim
As expected, Malaysia took the game to Singapore right from kick-off and had their first chance when Shakir Ali’s shot was deflected for a corner. Norshahrul was next to try his luck, but his effort sailed way over the bar after a neat one-two with Safiq.
The Tigers early dominance paid off in the nineteenth minute when Norshahrul dinked in a floating cross which was beautifully flicked home by Shakir Ali to give Malaysia a deserved lead.
Singapore slowly came out of their traps and Alexander Duric saw his effort saved by Khairul Fahmi and the danger was eventually cleared.
Malaysia regained the initiative and Gurusamy was unlucky to see his 25 yard effort just whistle past the post with Mohammad Izwan at full stretch.
The midfielder then floated an inch perfect cross for Shakir Ali, only to see the striker head just past the post.
Safiq Rahim fashioned Malaysia’s last chance of the half with a low free-kick that was palmed away by Izwan as the Harimau Malaya went into the break clearly the better side.
Singapore coach Radojko Avramovic brought on Agu Casmir for Firdaus Kasman in the second half to boost the Lions attacking foray but it they were stung through wonderful Tigers second goal.
There appeared little danger when Safiq Rahim lined up a free-kick from 30 yards out, but he curled in a sublime effort into the roof of the net as Mohamad Izwan was left clutching at thin air.
Things got heated soon after when Singapore’s Mustafic Fahrudin lunged in dangerously at Norhshahrul. Referee Teetichai had no choice but to issue the midfielder a red card, leaving Singapore down to ten men. Malaysian defender Bunyamin Umar was however lucky to escape without a caution for his part in the tussle.
Malaysia were all over their neighbors by now, and goalkeeper Izwan produced two fingertip saves to deny substitute Safee Sali and Gurusamy as Malaysia threatened to add to their advantage.
As it turned out, two goals were enough as Malaysia ran out worthy winners to avenge their first leg result and send 30,000 fans home with big smiles on their face.
