SUPER LEAGUE : Kuala Lumpur FA 0-0 LionsXII: Goalless draw halts LionsXII title charge

The Singapore side were left frustrated by a very determined KL side who looked nothing like a side fighting relegation

V.Sundramoorthy's men might have seen their title hopes dissipate after a 0-0 draw at the Hang Jebat Stadium on Tuesday night against Kuala Lumpur FA.

A largely makeshift side included debutant Abdil Qayim in the heart of defence with the returning Hariss Harun who was also captain for the day in Shahril Ishak's absence.

Raihan Rahman started down the left for the LionsXII as well with Irwan Shah slotting in as a makeshift right-back.

The home side looked nothing like a team without a single win all season and rooted to the foot of the table. Afiq Azmi and Stanley Bernard were a real menace upfront against the table-topping LionsXII.

Afiq came the closest in the match when he unleashed an acrobatic volley early in the encounter that was reminiscent of Chanturu's goal against the Lions two weeks ago. The shot, however, whizzed just past the foot of the goalmouth.

The match was oddly moodless given the poor turnout for the day as the teams played to a near empty stadium. Shahdan Sulaiman gave the travelling Singaporean fans something to cheer for in the 18th minute when his volley was almost deflected past the unsuspecting Nazri Ahmad by his own defender.

Shahdan again almost embarrassed the Kuala Lumpur custodian when his free-kick was fumbled just over the crossbar near the half-hour mark.

But Firdaus Kasman had the best opportunity in the first-half when he was found unmarked by Khairul Amri in the centre of the penalty box but the midfielder took too long to steady himself and was closed down quickly.

Kuala Lumpur meanwhile kept up their pressure but they were unable to conjure anything more threatening than a long-range effort by Stanley that flashed past the upright in the second-half.

The 0-0 scoreline virtually ended the LionsXII title hopes and left them four points clear at the top but having played five more games than Kelantan. Kuala Lumpur meanwhile remain rooted to the bottom with no wins and having earned only their third point of the season.
